Brittle Starfish (Ophiocoma scolopendrina) are native to Micronesia and as scavengers they make an excellent addition to a Clean-Up Crew. They can grow up to 1 foot in size and are fueled by detritus, food waste, and decaying matter. As a nocturnal species, they often hide out of sight among the rock work during the day, though if they sense food, they may come out in search of a daytime meal. When adding to their diet, consider feeding them meaty foods like pieces of shrimp. These stars are one of the faster moving species, so don’t be surprised if you see their arms quickly coming out from the rockwork to grab a snack during feeding time. As with other species, they are able to regenerate lost arms, but try to avoid placing them in tanks with natural predators. Copper will kill them, so avoid using any copper based medications or treatments. When it comes time to add them to the tank, a drip acclimation will work, but make sure to do so in a tall, steep sided container so they don’t escape.
